Once again, a great time was had at Cabot's Pueblo Museum on June 6. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Cabot's is one of the desert's treasures, and their annual fundraiser is always a great time for a great cause. Getting your picture taken with a cute burro, in this case miniature donkey Romeo - and the disembodied hand of Galena, Don Reed in the Hawaiian shirt, Jane Pojawa with the big smile, and native ceramicist Tony Soares in the back row with yours truly - is just one of the many perks. It has been just great to see Cabot's Pueblo Museum become the center of Desert Hot Springs over just the past couple o' years and we certainly wish them all the best in the future.
I'd like to give a special shout out to Kelly O'Sullivan of the Hi-Desert Star in Yucca Valley. Her "What's in a Name?" project turned her to the very odd name of New Dixie Mine Road and eventually that made its way into Basin-Wide Spirit, their seasonal magazine. Kurt Schauppner was the reporter for this project, and we're also pleased as can be that our friend Tony Soares, an awesome traditional potter, is also included for his work with the Desert Institute in Joshua Tree. This here is a revisit of a flint knapping class I attended back in '06. Tony Soares is better known around the desert as the Ollaman, but I was fortunate enough to make his acquaintance over at the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum at one of his rare point making classes. Making an arrowhead is one of those things that when you see a pro crank one out it looks easy - and it's not. But it is a skill, and skills can be learned. Sure does give you an appreciation of how things were in the old days, and let me tell you folks, those things are sharp! Also - a shout out to my buddy Kiriel, who let me use "Ponder Rosa" off her Big Earth Sky album.
